Our Philosophy of Care

Informed Choice

Midwifery promotes decision-making as a shared responsibility between the client, their family (as defined by the client) and the clinical care providers. As your midwives, we will provide you with relevant research, community standards, and, when applicable, clinical recommendations, in order to support you in making the decisions you feel are best for you and your baby. We believe that informed choice is an integral part of midwifery care, and invite you to make us aware of your expectations, wishes and plans so we can better individualize your care.

Choice of Birthplace

Registered Midwives in BC are licensed for both home and hospital birth. In Victoria, all midwives hold privileges at Victoria General Hospital. Women with low-risk pregnancies may also choose to give birth at home. There have been several quality studies assessing the safety of home birth, including many looking specifically at home birth outcomes in British Columbia.

Continuity of Care

Throughout your pregnancy, birth, and post-partum period, you will be attended by midwives you know. As Registered Midwives, we are mandated by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives to provide continuity for our clients. We believe that being attended by a caregiver with whom you have developed a meaningful relationship benefits both the client and the midwife.

Midwifery Outcomes

Research suggests that midwifery care results in fewer interventions for mom & babe, with no increase in adverse outcomes. The Cochrane Review analyzed 15 studies involving 17,674 women in a systematic review of midwifery care, concluding that “Most women should be offered ‘midwife-led continuity of care.’“ Midwives also enjoy a very high rate of client satisfaction. In a recent national survey, clients of midwives were significantly more likely to rate their birth experience as “very positive.”
